Marley was dead to begin with, and here there was no doubt possible. The register of his burial was signed by his priest, the clergyman, the undertaker and funeral director who led the funeral. Scrooge signed it, and the stock exchange the name of Scrooge was good for anything he decides to sign. Old Marley was as dead as a nail nailed to a door.
